Goals from Simon Grayson in the eighth minute and Richard Hepworth in the sixteenth, gave United a strong early lead at Emley. However the home side came back strongly to reduce the arrears in the twenty-second minute with a goal from Balmer. They then equalized when Smith scored from the spot in the fiftieth minute, before taking the lead when Green scored twenty minutes later. However, United finished the stronger and after John Gomersall had drawn them level in the seventy-seventh minute, Ryan Nicholls got the winner six minutes later.
